Dearest Friends of Our Eucharistic Lord,
In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death and to guide our feet into the way of peace (Lk 1:78-79).
The first years of this Third Christian Millennium have witnessed some tragic and foreboding events for mankind. As I watched in horror as the events of September 11 unfolded on television and struggled to make sense of these barbaric acts, I found guidance in the encyclical Mirę Caritatis, written by Pope Leo XIII in 1902.
The prophetic pope explained that if the hearts of men grow cold to Divine Life, how unimaginably cold they will grow towards human life. He was disturbed by the decline in Eucharistic devotion and what this coldness to God would portend for humanity. Perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament was the solution he proposed to prevent the many unspeakable crimes against humanity that he feared would happen and, as a matter of historical fact, have indeed happened since.
Our Blessed Mother first appeared in Fatima on May 13, 1917, a date known then as the Feast of Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament! As if to echo the Vicar of Christ, the events at Fatima were a clarion call for mankind to turn back to Jesus in the Eucharist. Recall the Angel prostrate before the Blessed Sacrament and the prayer of adoration he taught the children. Recall the explicit requests of the Virgin for Communion and adoration. Recall, especially, that the title 'Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament', first invoked by St. Peter Eymard and later confirmed by numerous popes, specifically refers to Mary's desire for Jesus to be lifted up in love and glory through Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration.
Faced with the suffering and inhumanity of the world today, let us be encouraged by the climax of the events at Fatima, the miracle of the sun, witnessed by seventy-thousand people on October 13, 1917. Clouds hid the sun, symbolizing the darkness that engulfs a world turned from God. The rains fell, as a sign of the copious tears resulting from man's inhumanity towards man. Mud was everywhere, like the corruption around us today. Then the sun started to spin with the splendor of many colors and came hurling down towards the earth. The clouds parted, the rain stopped, the mud disappeared, everything was radiant!
Jesus said, "I have come to cast fire upon the earth." The miracle of the sun at Fatima foretells the coming glory of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, about which Scripture says:
I saw a new heaven and a new earth... the holy city coming down out of heaven... I heard a loud voice from the throne, "Behold, the dwelling of God is with men. He will dwell with them, and they shall be his people... He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain, for the former things have passed away." And He Who sat upon the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new." (cf. Rev 21:1-5)
What could be more exciting? In working to organize perpetual adoration we are working, side by side with the Blessed Mother, for the coming of a new heaven and a new earth; God's Reign of Love and His Kingdom of Peace. And, there, we will be able to say to Jesus: "Because I believed I spoke out" (2 Cor 4:13).
Thank you for your patience in studying this manual and your eagerness to implement this program in your parish. I pray that we will soon work together towards this end.
In Jesus, Mary & Joseph,
