Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration (PEA) is a Eucharistic devotion wherein members of a parish, a group of neighboring parishes, or some other sort of community, unite in making continuous adoration before the exposed Blessed Sacrament throughout the twenty-four hours of the day, seven days a week.
The simplest reason is that Jesus wants it! For a detailed discussion of the motivation behind Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration, please refer to our online library.
To begin Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration, what is needed is for enough people to be willing to spend one hour each week, on a regular and continuing basis, with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Each person commits himself or herself to a specific day and hour of the week or, in some cases, the night hours may be covered by families, prayer groups or other organizations that commit to a weekly or monthly overnight vigil. In any case, a schedule is made wherein all 168 hours of the week are covered by at least one committed and accountable individual or group.
The League of Eucharistic Guardians is an Association of the lay faithful that exists solely to promote, establish and maintain parish-based Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration. A Chapter may be established in every parish that has, or would like to have, a chapel of adoration. Membership in the Chapter is open to all parishioners willing to commit themselves as Eucharistic Guardians. The Chapter assumes responsibility for organizing and maintaining the parish adoration program and the chapel according to the norms of the Association. In each diocese, a promoter may be appointed by the Moderator of the Association, with the approval of the Ordinary, to assist and oversee the Chapters.
Please note that it is not necessary for a parish to establish a Chapter of the League of Eucharistic Guardians in order to have PEA. It is, however, necessary to conduct an effective evangelization and to have a proper organizational structure in order to establish and maintain PEA according to the norms of the Church. Thus, whether or not your parish finds it advantageous to be affiliated with us, you will still find our program useful in your efforts. In either case, we are happy to assist you in any way we can.
John Paul the Great asked that Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration be established in every parish throughout the world. Since 1980, thousands of parishes have responded. Our program is put together based upon many years of success.
Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration is started in a parish through a simple process of
each of which is discussed briefly below.
First we must pray and dedicate our efforts to the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, asking for the grace to lift Him up in love and glory in fulfillment of His Father's Will. We entrust our efforts to Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, the Spouse of the Holy Spirit, who will obtain for us the grace to succeed.
Two key words to remember are inspiration and invitation. The people must be taught the power and the value of Eucharistic adoration. They must be evangelized so that they want to participate and they must be invited so that they can participate.
It has been our constant experience that a comprehensive parish evangelization, described in Section 2 of this PEA Kit, will yield a response that is more than sufficient to establish PEA in your parish. It is a modern day version of Jesus asking the apostles in faith to go out into the deep and cast their nets on the starboard side (Jn 21:6). The apostles caught so many fish that their nets almost broke! The same divine principle holds for PEA . Those who have the great faith to start PEA are always surprised at the many people who respond and who remain faithful to it.
The "key" is lay responsibility. The laity are called to holiness and to an active participation in the mission of the Church. PEA is a project of the lay faithful working under the direction of the parish priest.
PEA can be organized in different ways. Section 3 of this PEA Kit presents the basic structure of PEA, which can be modified to fit the particular needs of your parish. No matter which modifications your parish adopts, leadership and accountability are essential and indispensable factors. If evangelization efforts can be likened to casting a net, organizational efforts can be likened to constructing a net that will be able to effectively hold all the fish we will catch so that they won't slip away.
Finally, Section 4 of this PEA Kit discusses possible locations for a PEA chapel in your parish along with necessary physical preparations. Finding a room for Jesus to be loved and adored by the hundreds of people who will want to visit Him each week should be the easiest of tasks but, should you encounter any difficulty, please entrust your efforts to St. Joseph as he has first-hand experience of such difficulties. Persevere, knowing that where your treasure is, there your heart will be!
Remember that Our Lord said... Fear is useless, what is needed is trust!
