The spirit of giving is something which all of us have experienced, sometimes as the giver and other times as the recipient. The joy of Christmas is that we experience both; with our friends and family, but also with Jesus our Savior. It doesn't take very long to think of the many wonderful gifts that God has given to us but it can take some time for us to recall a really beautiful gift that we have given to Him.
Let's face it, it's hard to find the right gift for the God-Man Who Has Everything! Yet this is the very challenge of Christmas because it is His Birthday we are celebrating.
We have no choice but to resign ourselves to the fact that God will never allow Himself to be outdone in generosity: He is the Ultimate Giver. He is also the Ultimate Gift.
Nothing we can give compares with the Gift of Jesus Himself. However, the greatest gift that we can give, and indeed for which He yearns, is a quiet holy hour of prayer with Him in the Sacrament of His Presence. It is here that we express our appreciation for His Gift.
Through adoration we say: "Jesus, I just wanted to come back and thank you for the Precious Gift that You have given me and let You know that I stand in awe at the Sacrifice You lovingly and willingly made to do so. Mostly, however, I want you to know that I cherish Your love for me which inspired this Gift and, if you don't mind, I'd just like to spend some quiet time with You and have a heart to Heart talk."
The joy that just one holy hour brings to the Sacred and Eucharistic Heart of Jesus is immeasurable. Jesus doesn't require us to do a holy hour each week, just as you do not require your loved ones to respond graciously and lovingly in response to your love for them. And this is exactly why it is such a pleasing gift to Our Lord; because it is a free act of love which we do not do because we have to but simply because we want to... what a great gift for Jesus this Christmas!
