Gospel: Mark 1:9-11

The Gift of New Life

Today we celebrate the gift of new life.

HERE we see the most beautiful site in all creation,
the gift of a sweet and lovable newborn child.
The gift of new life fills our hearts with joy
and inspires fresh hope deep within our spirits.
This is why we spontaneously break out into smiles
when we look at the little face of baby (name of child).

Spousal Love & The Gift of Human Life

Little (name of child) gives witness to the fruitfulness of marital love.
I want to thank you, (name of parents),
for the commitment you made to each other in marriage,
and for your living out of this commitment
in your generous love for one another.

Far from being a private affair,
your marital love is vital for us all!
The future of our community... the future of our parish...
indeed the very future of all humanity...
belongs in part to this child... the fruit of your love.

But most amazing of all...
is that the sweet embrace of marital love
is also a participation in the creative power of God Himself!

Baby (name of child) is a new creation...
infinitely valuable and infinitely lovable...
a unique person made to the image and likeness of God.
This goes far beyond human ability!

Little (name of child) is a living testimony
to the infinite creative power of God
working through human love.

Never forget, (name of parents),
this awesome and holy mystery entrusted to you by God in marriage...
By generously offering yourselves to one another as gifts of love,
you become the means through which God creates new life.

This is the gift and the mystery of human procreation.
God Himself created it... God Himself pronounced it very good.
Indeed God Himself is intimately present
in each and every act of marital love.
We thank God for this gift today
even as we thank Him for the gift of new life.

The Paschal Mystery & The Gift of Divine Life

As good as that is, it gets even better!

But first, the bad news...
Whenever we sin, we turn away from God.
And since God is the fullness of life,
we turn away from life each time we sin.
Scripture puts it simply... sin leads to death.

All of us are aware of our own sins.
Scripture traces sin all the way back to Adam and Eve.
Because of sin, our human nature is fragile...
and each of us will someday die.

But the Good News is that sin and death do not have the last word!
By His Passion, Death & Resurrection Jesus has conquered sin...
He has healed our fallen human nature...
and won for us the gift of eternal life.

United to the Passion and Death of Christ
through the waters of Baptism
we rise with Him to new life in the Spirit.

God is not satisfied giving us natural life.
He wants us to enjoy a life beyond the limits of nature.
In Baptism the gift of new life already received by baby (name of child)
is elevated to the supernatural life of grace...
which is nothing less than sharing in the very life of God...
Father, Son & Holy Spirit.

Our religion, dear brothers and sisters, is a religion of glory,
a religion of dwelling in the Heart of the Triune God.
As you, (name of parents), recognize little (name of child) as your own,
and hold (him / her) dear in your hearts...
God the Father looks upon all the baptized
and recognizes in them His own beloved Son
on Whom His favor rests.

We celebrate today not only the creation of new life,
but also its restoration in Christ.
We celebrate not only the generation of new life
but also its regeneration in the Holy Spirit.
Yes, today we celebrate the fullness of life
given to us by Our Heavenly Father.

Unto Life Eternal

You, dear (name of parents), have already cooperated with God
in bringing about the natural life of baby (name of child).
By bringing (him / her) here today you are cooperating with God
in bringing about (his / her) supernatural life of grace.
But your responsibility does not stop here.

The new life we celebrate today is just a beginning...
the beginning of life on the natural level...
and the beginning of life on the supernatural level.

Jesus forever united in Himself the natural and the supernatural.
And through Baptism little (name of child) will today be united to Him.
It is your responsibility, (name of parents),
to preserve and nurture this union...
so that one day you will be united with one another...
in celebrating the eternal life of glory.

Amen, Amen, my dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
today and forever we celebrate the gift of new life!
