about this page!

As Jesus was betrayed for thirty pieces of silver, I propose that we make reparation with thirty pieces of gold. Whereas thirty pieces of silver indicate the betrayal of desecration and indifference, thirty pieces of gold indicate the reparation won through the awesome power of Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration. What I am precisely and concisely proposing is for the establishment of thirty chapels of perpetual adoration in REPARATION for the Da Vinci Desecration.

It had been my intent not to weigh in on the Da Vinci Desecration but an item in the morning news changed my mind and inspired me to issue this challenge to Catholics around the world.

Philippine Daily Inquirer
Dateline: 23 May 2006, Manila Philippines

SM cinemas around the country have as a matter of policy not shown movies rated R-18, or for adults only. But even before the Motion Picture and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) came out with an R-18 rating for the controversial "The Da Vinci Code," the family of SM group patriarch Henry Sy reportedly had made up its mind not to show it in their theaters. The film's promoters were quoted as lamenting that they would suffer a huge drop in income as a result of the SM movie chain's boycott. But Sy reportedly reasoned that the Megamall in Mandaluyong City has a chapel at the fifth floor in which the exposed Blessed Sacrament is adored by hundreds of people every day, so how can they show the movie that desecrates Jesus Christ?

Some background for readers outside the Philippines: The SM Group owns and operates the largest chain of shopping malls and cinemas in the Philippines. SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City, one of the many cities that make up Metro Manila, hosts the "Chapel of the Eucharistic Lord" where exposition and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament indeed occurs throughout Mall hours. And by the way, to my knowledge, Henry Sy is not (yet?) Catholic, though I understand that his wife, Mrs. Fely Sy, is devout.

While the stance of Mr. Sy is remarkable in an age when many businessmen, Catholic or otherwise, make decisions solely according to anticipated earnings, what I find most inspiring is the rationale upon which his stance is based. His reasoning is so lucid that even the most crass anti-Catholic bigot must concede the point, namely, that adoration of Jesus and desecration of Jesus, together with indifference thereto, stand in mutual opposition, one to another, as contradictories.

Mr. Sy's admirably clear reasoning confirmed my prior suspicion that the Da Vinci Desecration is in fact apocalyptic, with a little "a", even if (perhaps?) not with a big "A". To wit, an apocalypse, properly speaking, is a revelation that the light of Christ and the darkness of evil stand so opposed that there is absolutely nothing in common between them. By demarcating the two positions as contradictory, and leaving no middle ground, an apocalypse forces people to take a stand on one or the other side. The reasoning of Mr. Sy is instructive as it reveals that the extremities of these two positions are precisely characterized by adoration on the one side and desecration or indifference on the other.

This apocalyptic understanding should be a clarion call for Christians everywhere to wake up and smell the coffee! Let me explain...

First, anyone involved in making or promoting the Da Vinci Desecration, whether they want to believe it or not, has spat directly in the Divine Face of Christ. Owners of cinemas and bookstores who consider themselves Christian and have yet profited from the book or film have committed the sin of Judas. While we might lovingly correct these people where possible it is IMPERATIVE that we make REPARATION to the Heart of Christ for these outrages.

Second, many who consider themselves Christian apparently find the film entertaining even while, presumably, not believing its deceptions. A simple hypothetical question gives the lie to this pseudo-position: Might one conceivably find entertainment value in a film that depicts one's own mother as a prostitute, murderer, liar and thief? The point is as compelling as it is clear: If you can read this book or watch this film without being outraged, you need to ask yourself whether you really love Jesus! While you may not have spit in His Face as did those who made, promoted and profited from the film, He may yet spit you out of His Mouth for being lukewarm! While we might fraternally correct such people accordingly it is MOST IMPERATIVE that we make REPARATION to the Heart of Christ for the lack of outrage that bears witness to such pathetically lukewarm hearts.

And herein lies the challenge I now propose to Catholics around the world as a most fitting response to the Da Vinci Desecration:

As Jesus was betrayed for thirty pieces of silver, I propose that we make reparation with thirty pieces of gold. Whereas thirty pieces of silver indicate the betrayal of desecration and indifference, thirty pieces of gold indicate the reparation won through the awesome power of Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration. What I am precisely and concisely proposing is for the establishment of thirty chapels of perpetual adoration in REPARATION for the Da Vinci Desecration.

The clear message of the Apocalypse is that our love for Jesus, the Lamb that was slain, must be greater than the hatred and indifference of the kings of the earth. As companions of the Lamb, our primary response to the desecrations of the devil and his minions must be perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament: It was this that brought them before God's throne: day and night they minister to Him in His Temple... Day and night they sing without pause... Worthy is the Lamb that was slain!

Consider Our Lord's Agony: He began to sweat blood as He realized that the Sacrifice He was about to make, the Sacrifice anticipated in the Last Supper and given to us in the Holy Eucharist, would be neglected, rejected, and despised by so many and appreciated by so few. He came into His own yet His own received Him not! The sole request that fell from Our Lord's Suffering Lips in the midst of His bitter Agony is the request He asks each of us at this very moment: Could you not watch one hour with Me?

There are only one hundred and sixty-eight hours of the week. To have perpetual adoration all we need is one or two guardians, that is, committed adorers, for each hour of the day and night. The vast majority of our parishes have three, five or ten times the number of people required to begin perpetual adoration. If only one-third, one-fifth or one-tenth of the parishioners respond to Our Lord's appeal for a weekly holy hour we can easily begin perpetual adoration!

The goal, then, is thirty chapels of perpetual adoration. I am hereby and herein asking you - YES, YOU to help attain this goal!

It has been well said that evil triumphs only when good men and women fail in their duty to stand up for the good! This article is not intended to give you warm fuzzy feelings but to incite you to action! The action I propose is precise and potent:

First: If you don't yet make a weekly or daily holy hour, make this commitment today! Some reasons for doing so can be read here.

Second: In choosing your weekly or daily holy hour, please consider an hour in the middle of the night. Some reasons for doing so can be read here.

Third: If your parish, or any parish near you, does not yet have perpetual adoration, it may well be one of the thirty pieces of gold we seek! Thus after acquainting yourself with the following please approach the pastor and parish council.

If you need any assistance whatsoever, please contact me! There are missionaries all over the world ready and waiting to visit your parish!

What I would also like to ask of you...

Please distribute this challenge far and wide. Email it to your family, friends, confreres and colleagues. Post it on your website or blog. The Feasts of Corpus Christi and Sacred Heart are right around the corner so lets get to work now! The sooner this challenge is disseminated, the sooner we will have thirty pieces of gold for Jesus, that is, thirty chapels of perpetual adoration established in REPARATION for the outrages, sacrileges and indifference by which the Heart of Jesus is offended.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, the Da Vinci Desecration has rightly galvanized Catholics around the world in expressing sentiments of outrage. Let us now be united in bringing about a miracle of great power and love. An eminent philosopher at Boston College, Dr. Peter Kreeft, has well argued that perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is more powerful for construction than nuclear bombs are for destruction!

Let us laugh in the face of the devil by making it absolutely clear to he and his cohort that the harder they work to crown Jesus with thorns and lift Him up in hatred, harder still will we work and pray and sacrifice to crown Him with glory and lift Him up in love through perpetual adoration. Let them have their thirty pieces of silver but let us give to Jesus His thirty pieces of gold, singing together the song of Moses and of the Lamb!

Mighty and wonderful are Your works, Lord God Almighty!
Righteous and true are Your ways, O King of the nations!
Who would dare refuse You honor, or the glory of Your Name, O Lord?
Since You alone are Holy, all nations shall come and worship in Your Presence.
Your mighty deeds are clearly seen.
