Gospel: John 2:1-11

1. Is anybody here just a little bit nervous?

slowly, dramatically and comically look over to the bride and groom

Don't worry dear, (names of bride and groom),
All of us here today who have been through this experience
were every bit as nervous as you are right now... I sure know I was!

That's why I want to ask the two of you to relax for a moment...
Take a few deep breaths... That's right... breathe in... breathe out...
Everything is ok... Everything is alright... In fact, everything is great...

Your love for each other has brought the two of you
to this place and to this moment...
And this is exactly where you are supposed to be...
here with one another... here with family and friends... here with Jesus.

2. According to the Gospel of St. John,
Jesus performed His first miracle at a wedding feast in Cana.
This indicates how important weddings are for Jesus.
Your love for each other is precious in His eyes and dear to His Heart.
Jesus rejoices with you today...
He wants to remain forever an intimate part of your married life...
Through your love He wants to reveal His glory.

The part that Jesus wants to play in your marriage
will very often be a hidden role... He will take a back seat...
His role at Cana was decisive... but hidden...
so that only the waiters knew what He did.

In Christian marriage, Jesus limits Himself to a supporting role.
The agents... the actors... the celebrants of Holy Matrimony
are the bride and groom themselves.

You, (names of bride and groom), are the ministers today.
The rest of us are here to support you...
Jesus is here to support you!

3. Today will mark the first day of your marriage.
But by making your wedding vows today
you are already anticipating every day of your marriage...
and giving your consent to ALL that it will bring;
the ecstasy and the pain... the laughter and the tears...
the triumphs and the tribulations... until death do you part.

Caught up in the excitement of this happy day,
it is hard to imagine the possibility of storm clouds over the horizon.
But, dear (names of bride and groom), such times will come...
when the trials facing you will seem overwhelming...
when it seems that the joy, the hope and the love of this day have run dry...
just as the wine ran dry in Cana.

Trials are an inevitable part of every marriage.
The Good News of Christian marriage is that you need not face them alone.
When the wine of your love runs dry... Jesus will provide!

Through His Sacraments, through His Word,
through the teachings and the ministers of His Church...
and through this community gathered here today,
Jesus remains always nearby... ready, willing and able...
to assist and support the two of you in your marriage.

4. At Cana there were six stone water jars... That's a lot of wine!
But normally the jars were used for ceremonial washings;
to wash people who were physically, morally or spiritually unclean.

By making use of these ceremonial jars, Jesus shows His power...
not only to cleanse and purify, but also to sanctify, divinize and deify.
The transformation of water into wine is a symbol,
of how Jesus comes to make all things new...
for thus does He reveal His glory.

The power of Christian marriage...
is not that your problems will disappear,
but that your problems will become occasions for divine grace.
Jesus will elevate your love for one another...
by transforming all of your problems and difficulties,
even the ones you bring upon yourselves through sin and weakness,
in the all-consuming fire of His divine love!

5. People usually serve the choice wine first...
And later they serve a lesser vintage...
What Jesus has done is to keep the choice wine until now.

You come, (names of bride and groom), before this altar today
intoxicated with the wine of your love...
to offer yourselves as gifts to one another.

In the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony
Jesus unites your offering so closely to Himself
that you will leave this altar today
intoxicated with the wine of His divine love...
gifts not only for one another but for the whole Church
and even for the whole world.

If you accept the grace offered in this Sacrament...
if you allow Jesus to play His part in your marriage...
if you embrace Him as you embrace one another...
your love will grow with each passing day...
overflowing and bearing fruit.

Your love for each other has brought the two of you
to this place and to this moment...
And this is exactly where you are supposed to be...
here with one another... here with family and friends... here with Jesus.

Drink deeply, (names of bride and groom),
from the wine that Jesus offers you here...
become for one another channels of divine life and love...
And through you, (names of bride and groom),
Jesus will reveal His glory!
